I took this online workshop, Tarot Beyond the Binary, led by Lauren McAlpin (they/them) offered by Catland Books. It was so good!

I like the queer interpretations offered in the workshop better than some of the ones in Queering the Tarot by Cassandra Snow. That book is good but is really specific to applying card interpretations to certain queer experiences rather than the idea of queering the interpretation of a card for any querent. If that difference makes sense. Queering a card includes, in my view, examining non-heteronormative (capitalist) power structures possible in reimagining the archetypal stories of the tarot.

The host is also really into describing some of the cards as famous people to help with understanding the cards, which I love. They describe the Hierophant as Andre Leon Talley and that is really helpful to translating a medieval character into a contemporary interpretation. They also call the King of Cups Oprah energy, which, yes.

Some of the major arcana figures can easily be any or agender in representation (fool, hermit, hierophant, for example), but as I’m creating my collaged tarot deck, I really want to get rid of the imperialist pairings (emperor & empress in the major arcana, and the page, knight, queen, king in each suit). And I mean eliminate them, not just play with gender roles or representation. So this has helped give me some other meanings for those court cards especially.

Does anyone know of any scholarships queering Carl Jung? Especially the anima and animus?
