I met with a client this morning to pick up their photos to digitize in preparation for hurricane season. Afterward, I was feeling a pull to go sit by the water for a while instead of driving straight home.
It wasn’t long before I saw three fins off in the distance—dolphins in the Vinoy basin, a favorite place for them to hunt and play. I stayed at the park to watch them, all the while talking to my business coach for our weekly session, and tried to take pictures. One of the big guys swam right under my feet above (not pictured—they’re faster than I am).
You can see in the pictures below how close they were. This one is swimming toward me so she looks much smaller than she actually is.
They kept coming close to the wall then moving farther out, and before I left I saw the entire pod. About seven altogether including two babies.
My coach, Lisa, said dolphins can signal finding joy in work since for them hunting and playing are part of the same social action.
Sorry to brag but I really do find joy in my work! Helping people connect to their family stories and to remember the happiest moments of their lives is really fulfilling. I feel really lucky to be doing this work.
I’m really glad I followed that little voice that told me to go see what was happening by the water.
